Nursing 403- Career Pathway Expanding Horizons
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this paper is to define a clinical problem, review the literature for appropriate research supported nursing interventions, critique current practice and provide a plan for changing or adapting clinical practice.
Approach to Assignment
My approach to writing this paper involved evaluating a practice in my work environment that needed to be addressed. I chose my examine the inconsistency of staff in caring for patients with multidrug resistant organisms such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE), clostridium difficile (C. difficile), and other communicable diseases in the perioperative setting. The prevention of the transmission of pathogens is a critical component in providing a safe environment for patients and the staff. MDRO’s can be a life threatening complication for surgical patients. I assessed the problem, and planned interventions to correct the inconsistencies including incorporating the patients isolation status as a part of our standard hand-off communication, providing education, and surveillance to improve compliance. I sought out evidence based studies to support the information I would provide for the staff. I have learned the best way to influence change is to find quality research to support or change practices to improve patient care and safety.
